Nepal to set up 18 more seismic stations

KATHMANDU: Preparation is underway to set up additional 18 seismic stations by 2018 for microseismic monitoring in Nepal, which lies in a seismically active region between Indian and Tibetan tectonic plates.

Microseimic monitoring in Nepal started in November 1978 with the installation of first short period vertical seismic station in Phulchoki, on the southern purlieu of Kathmandu Valley. Currently, there are 21 short period seismic stations and seven accelerometer stations in Nepal, according to the National Seismological Centre.

The new seismic stations will be installed with the assistance of different countries, the Rastriya Samachar Samiti reported.

Chinese government has pledged to help Nepal set up 10 seismic stations, seismologist at the NSC Bharat Prasad Koirala said. Likewise, Thailand-based Rhymes Company and Japanese government will help set up four and eight seismic stations respectively.
