Congress leader Mahat asks government to mend its ways

Pokhara, August 17

Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Sharan Mahat today threatened to launch protests from the streets and the Parliament if the incumbent government did not mend its ways.

Talking to journalists in Pokhara, NC leader Mahat accused the incumbent government of heading towards totalitarianism. “Interfering in the affairs of independent judiciary, attempts to control the press, curtailing individual liberty and its reluctance to give the post of speaker or deputy to the opposition party show that the government is moving towards totalitarianism”, Mahat claimed.

Stating that the government had overturned decisions made by Nepali Congress-led government in the past, Mahat said that his party would announce protest programmes against the government in a fortnight.

“NC wants this government to govern for five years. But, since the government has violated constitutional provisions, we have no other choice but to hit the streets,” Mahat added.

Mahat accused the government of trying to foment hatred towards federalism by raising taxes. “The government showed the dream of economic prosperity, but it has failed to create environment for the same,” he said. He charged that the government had ignored jurisdiction and inherent rights of federalism.
