KATHMANDU: The ministerial meeting of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation member states has appointed Shahidul Islam as the new secretary general of BIMSTEC.

Islam is serving as the ambassador of Bangladesh to France.  Bangladesh government had put forward his name as the candidate during the senior officials’ meeting, as the term of Sri Lanka’s Sumith Nakandala, who was the first secretary general of the BIMSTEC, ended on Thursday.

Islam will serve as secretary general for three years.
