NHRC gets USD 128 million to promote human rights

Kathmandu, May 5

Switzerland and Denmark today agreed to jointly contribute US$ 1.2 million to the United Nations Development Programme to support implementation of National Human Rights Commission’s strategic plan and to develop its internal capacity.

The support aims to increase capacities, skills, and abilities of NHRC commissioners and staff and strengthen it as an institution, the Swiss embassy said.

This will help the NHRC fulfil its mandate, increase its independence, legitimacy and leverage to advocate protection and promotion of human rights in Nepal.

Agreements were signed between Swiss Ambassador Urs Herren, Danish Ambassador Kirsten Geelan and UNDP Country Director Renaud Meyer today. The Project Document was signed by the NHRC and UNDP.
