NIC chief insists establishment of information commission in all provinces

PANCHTHAR: Chief of the National Information Commission (NIC), Krishna Hari Baskota, today stressed the need for establishing provincial information commission in all seven provinces of the country.

The Commission's board should be opened at all 753 local levels of the country under the coordination of vice-chairperson of a ward or deputy-mayor of a municipality, Baskota said talking to Rastriya Samachar Samiti in Panchthar's Phidim.

"Article 27 of the constitution has guaranteed the right to seek and provide information to every Nepali citizen. It however lacks the right to dissemination of information in line with the Human Rights Declaration 1947, which needs to be incorporated into the constitution" he asserted.

He also regretted the failure of the state bodies to provide information easily to media-persons, let alone fulfilling the need to disseminate and publicise information. "The government bodies should provide information at people's doorsteps," he added.
