No police posts in eastern hilly districts
Dharan: Ninety-five per cent of police posts in 16 eastern hilly districts have either been merged with the Area Police Office (Dharan) or moved to safer locations ever since the insurgency began. As a result, police presence has been confined to the district headquarters.
While 255 of 267 police posts have been moved to safer locations, 48 area police offices have been merged, deputy superintendent of police of the eastern regional police office, Biratnagar,
Pawan Kharel, said. Out of 78 area police offices, only 29 area police offices are functioning. The mergers of police posts and their shifting have intensified since 2002, Kharel said,
adding, however, that preparations were on to re-establish the posts. — HNS
