NSU activists, cops hurt in clashes

Itahari, July 24:

Six activists of Nepal Students’ Union and two policemen were injured in clashes here today. Itahari Bazaar remained tense the whole day after police fired tear gas shells to disperse NSU activists, who had gheraoed Area Police Office in Itahari.

Three weeks ago, two groups had clashed following a dispute over the collection of tax from shopkeepers in Gudrihat bazaar. Police had arrested NSU’s Kishor Limbu on the charge

of involvement in the Gudrihat incident.

They have been searching for Surya Rai, saying he was also involved in the incident. NSU activists gheraoed the police office at 11 am today after police raided Rai’s home. Policemen Lilaraj Ghimire and Bimal Basnet were injured when the activists hurled stones at police. Following stone-pelting, police rained batons upon the mob, injuring at least six students, NSU Sunsari chapter said. Police fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control and arrested two demonstrators.
