Oldest Gurukul in Panchthar closed

Phidim, April 29

The oldest Sanskrit Gurukul of Hilihang Rural Municipality in Panchthar will close from this academic session due to lack of students at Jorpokhari in the district.

Chandi, Rudri, Kaumudi and Veda were taught in the school.

A government-quota teacher Yogeshwor Bhattari said no student has come for admission in the school even though the government and local government have been trying their best to enrol students.

“I have padlocked the school and started teaching in Jor Pokharai Secondary School,” he said. Bhattrai said the School Management Committee has launched the admission campaign to enrol students in Sanskrit education.

Chairman of the school management committee Nitiraj Regmi said the Gurukuls started losing students after the government adopted the policy that not even a single student should fail in community schools.

The Gurukul School was established in 1926. As many as 60 students were admitted till 2006, but only four students enrolled in the school last year. Similarly, the Buddhist institution at Aagejung Gumba in Phalelung rural municipality was also closed due to lack of students from this academic session.
