Yarsha collector dies

BAJHANG: Tarjunlamu Lama (15), a resident of Kada VDC-6, Bajhang, died after she slipped off the snow and fell some 100 meter down to the Seti River gorge at Khirukhola on Wednesday. She had gone to the area, located at the foot of Saipal mountain, to pluck Yarshagumba, an aphrodisiac medicinal herb that fetches a good price. According to the police, they have not been able to pull out the body from the gorge yet. — HNS


Mother kills newborn

SANKHUWASABHA: A woman killed her newborn baby girl immediately after giving birth here in Sisuwa VDC of Sankhuwasabha district today. Asmita Rai (28), a resident of ward-7, had given birth to the girl on Sunday morning. She admitted to have murdered her baby instantly, according to the police. Asmita also said that she resorted to the crime in a bid to conceal her illegitimate relationship with a neighbour. Her husband has been working in Malaysia for the last three years, according to the police. — HNS


Inmates’ plight

Sarlahi: The dilapidated state of the prison building and lack of enough space has compelled inmates of Sarlahi jail to spend sleepless nights. Raj Kumar Shah, an inmate, said it was almost impossible to sleep in the night as the jail building leaked during rainy season. Moreover, the inmates were living in constant fear that the building would collapse, he added. Another jailbird Jit Bahadur Sunuwar, said, "Nine of us are huddled together in a small room. How can one even imagine us having a sound sleep?" Jailor, Anil Acharya, claimed that they had arranged for plastic sheets to prevent leakage in the jail building. As many as 14 to 37 inmates are locked in each of the six rooms in the jail building. — HNS
