Two killed in mishap

TANAHUN: Sitaram Dawadi (45) of Syangja district’s Sekham VDC and Chandra Kumar Shrestha (55) of Kaski district’s Dangsing VDC-5, were killed when their motorcycle collided with a passenger bus at Bhimad VDC’s Dharapani on Friday. The two were bound for Khairenitar from Tanahun’s Bhimad bazaar and died en route to the Seti Ganga Community Hospital in Dulegaunda, police said. — HNS

One dead in storm

MAHOTTARI: One Kishori Chamar of Matihani VDC 10 was killed when a storm caused an electric pole to fall on her on Thursday. The Nepal Electricity Authority, Mahottari, said power supply in the village was disrupted after the storm. Rains that lashed the region also damaged fruits and vegetables, while rooftops of some schools were blown away. Thatched houses of 68 fire victims of the bordering Bathnaha village development committee-6 were damaged by the storm, locals said. — HNS

Detainees warn govt

BHAIRAHAWA: Nineteen prisoners of conscience, being held at Bhairahawa prison, have warned to begin a fast-unto-death from May 8 onwards if they are not freed by May 7. Submitting a memorandum to the Chief District Officer of Rupandehi, Ganga Dutta Awasthi, the detainees demanded the release of political detainees throughout the country. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Mahanta Thakur, Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat and Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula on Friday resigned from the posts of treasurer of the Nepali Congress (NC), joint general secretary and chief of the organisation department of the NC. — HNS

KATHMANDU: The Children Peace Zone National Campaign has appealed to the government, the seven party-alliance and the CPN (Maoist) to ensure children’s rights to survival, protection, development and participation. KATHMANDU: An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale was recorded at 1:45 on Friday, with its epicentre around the Pujari village of Bajhang, the Lainchaur-based National Seismological Centre said. — RSS

Surprise DAO check

BARA: Twenty-four staffers were found playing truant during a surprise check conducted by the District Administration Office, Bara, on Thursday. The absentees included a section officer, 11 gazette officers of the DDC, two officers of the District Technical Office and 10 gazetted officers, it is learnt. — RSS
