Prohibitory order

SYANGYA: The District Administration Office (DAO), Syangja, on Wednesday, banned public gatherings, protests and torch rallies in the district headquarters, Walling bazaar and surrounding areas to thwart the seven-party alliance’s scheduled general strike. A District Security Committee meeting announced the prohibitory order in all areas of Syangja bazaar, Putali bazaar and Walling bazaar. — HNS

Aid for refugees

KATHMANDU: A Japanese non-governmental organisation, Shinnyo-en, has provided $38,462 to the UN refugee agency’s primary education programme for the Bhutanese refugee children in Nepal. Shinnyo-en has been supporting the Bhutanese refugee education programme since 2001. Primary and secondary education is provided to all refugee children residing in seven camps in eastern Nepal. — HNS

Traders to back strike

Nepalgunj: Traders of Nepalgunj have decided to support the general strikes announce by the seven agitating political parties. While the Nepalgunj-based Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) and the Chambers of Commerce had announced that they would not cooperate the movement. More than three dozen traders have submitted a memorandum to the NCCI and Chambers of Commerce, urging them to support the seven parties’ movement. — HNS

BHADRAPUR: Chairman of the Kirant Religion and Literature Uplift Association Shiva Kumar Yangya and District Secretary of the association Dilli Ram Fembu have appealed to the Maoists and human rights workers to ensure security and safe release of Panchthar DDC chairman Bam Bahadur Yongya and vice-chairman Rana Bahadur Khadka, who were abducted from Thapatar of Ilam on Monday. — RSS

Law minister in Delhi

KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Niranjan Thapa had a meeting with Indian Minister for Law and Justice Hansraj Bharadwaj at the latter’s office in New Delhi on Wednesday. Matters related to mutual interest and cooperation between Nepal and India and mutual cooperation in the legal sector were discussed during the meeting, according to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. — HNS

WHF for peace

BIRGUNJ: Chairman of the World Hindu Federation (WHF), Bharat Keshar Singh, said on Wednesday that sustainable peace in the country would only be possible through religious tolerance and social goodwill. Addressing a convention of the WHF Nepal national committee here, he said moral values, norms and traditions should be included in the school curriculum to instill in people sound moral character. — RSS

Sherpa to scale Choyu

KATHMANDU: Nawang Sherpa, a disabled mountaineer who has set a world record by successfully scaling the highest peak of the world is again set to climb 8201-metre high Choyu Mountain. Minister of State for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yangkila Sherpa handed over portraits of the King and Queen and a national flag to him as per his wish at a function here on Wednesday. — RSS

Crops destroyed

JANAKPURDHAM: Heavy rainfall with hailstones destroyed crops worth thousands of rupees in rural areas of Dhanusha district on Monday. The hailstorm has destroyed the standing crops of wheat and mangoes along with vegetables. The hailstones injured Rahamul Kawari of Mahendranagar VDC while he was working in the field. — RSS

Relief for fire victims

SINDHULI: A team from Sindhuli DAO and the Nepal Red Cross Society Sindhuli distributed relief materials to the fire victims of Ranichuri VDC, whose houses were gutted in a fire

on Sunday. Five people injured in the incident are undergoing treatment free of cost, CDO Gehanath Bhandari said. Ten people lost their lives in the incident. — RSS
