Envoy lays stone

Kathmandu: Indian ambassador to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukherjee laid the foundation stone for the construction of a school building of Shree Secondary School in Nepalgunj on Tuesday. “The school building named Nepal Bharat Maitri Bhawan will be constructed with the grant assistance of Rs 2,36,00,928 from the Indian government,” the Indian Embassy stated in a release. Mukherjee also inaugurated the building of Mahendra Library, which was built in Nepalgunj with the Indian assistance of Rs 12,19,431. The immediate beneficiaries of the projects would be the 1,000 students from Nepalgunj and adjoining districts. —HNS

Panel formed

KATHMANDU: A five-member committee was set up on Tuesday with the objective of preparing a concept paper on rights situation in Nepal, the HURON said in a release. The paper will be presented at the 62nd session of the UN Commission on Human Rights. HURON chairman Charan Prasai, INSEC chairman Sudodh Pyakurel, Gopal Siwakoti, general secretary of the Forum for the Protection of Human Rights, CWIN chairman Gauri Pradhan, are among the committee members. — HNS

Two lakh looted

POKHARA: A person looted two lakh rupees from Shikha Thapa, a resident of Majheri Patan, Pokhara Sub-metropolis, at Buddha Bisal Bazaar on Tuesday. Shikha said she had withdrawn the cash from the Naya Bazaar-based Machhapuchchhre Bank for the purpose of constructing a home. A person looted the cash from Shikha after throwing a plastic bag filled with garbage at her face, an eyewitness said. Police said they are looking for the looter. — HNS

Traffic resumes

PHIDIM: Maoists since Tuesday morning obstructed traffic along the Phidim-Taplejung road section of the Mechi Highway by felling trees at Bharapa and Amarpur areas of the road section. Ajay Bhattarai, DSP of the District Police Office said the road would be cleared by Wednesday. Meanwhile, transportation along the Prithvi Highway resumed at on Tuesday evening, seven hours after it was obstructed by the locals demanding treatment and compensation to Kalika Gotame, 50, of Manangpari VDC, who was seriously injured when a mircobus hit her at Tharpu bazaar on Tuesday morning. Gotame is undergoing treatment in Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara. — HNS

Maoists abduct two

DIPAYAL: Maoists on Tuesday abducted two persons, including an overseer of the Doti District Development Committee from Basudevi VDC of the district. The abductees included the overseer Dan Bahadur Karki and Netra Bahadur Bam, member of District Irrigation Consumer Committee. They were abducted while they had gone to supervise Basudevi Irrigation Project, district-based security sources said. — HNS
