Adulteration rampant

BHIMPHEDI: The Central Region Food Technology and Quality Control Office, Hetaunda carried out laboratory examination of some 583 samples of foodstuff collected from local markets in nine districts of the region. As per the data provided by the office, 65 of all the samples tested were found to be adulterated. The office stated that it renewed the licenses of 138 different industries of four districts in Janakpur Zone and five districts in Narayani Zone in the fiscal year 2008/09. Similarly, the office registered 20 food industries in the nine districts of the region in the last fiscal year. Meanwhile, the Office has registered 65 different cases at the District Administration Office for selling adulterated foodstuff, calling for legal action against the offenders. — RSS

Youth swept away

PARASI: A youth died when swept away by flood in Jharahi River in Nawalparasi district on Wednesday. Half -a-dozen VDCs have been inundated due to floods in local rivers triggered by incessant rainfall.

The deceased is Jaya Kumar Madhesia (22) of Rampurwa of Nawalparasi, police said. Likewise, the floods also inundated more than six VDCs of the district including parts of the district headquarters, Parasi. The villages inundated were Ward No. 2 of Ram Gram Municipality, and villages in Rampur Khadauna, Hakui, Sukauli and Rampurawa VDCs. Hundreds of houses are inundated and the most impact of flood is in Hakui, Sukaulia and Rampur Khadaina. — RSS

Environment policy

BIRGUNJ: Minister for Environment Thakur Sharma said on Wednesday that the government would bring national policy soon in a bid to address the problems and challenges appeared in the environmental sectors. Speaking at an interaction here on "Possibilities and Challenges in Energy Promotion", Thakur said the government would endorse the policy to minimise environmental imbalance and promote bio-diversity. He said issues of climate change would be included in the new constitution as it was now a global issue. He said the government was sensitive towards rapid climate change and environmental degradation. The minister also pledged to bring effective programmes to minimise the problems of environmental imbalance and decrease in bio-diversity and renewable energy. — RSS
