12q hashish seized

BIRGUNJ: Police seized 12 quintals of hashish from smugglers in Parsa

district on Friday. The smugglers had opened fire on a police team between the border of Khesraha and Sabaithawa village development committees before fleeing. However, nobody was injured in the incident. The smugglers fled the scene after the police opened retaliatory fire. The police also seized about 150 kg of hashish from Bindhyabasini on Saturday. — HNS

Hospital reopens

BIRGUNJ: Health services in National Medical Teaching Hospital, which was closed for 11 days due to the agitation of the hospital employees, resumed on Saturday after the hospital management agreed to address the 21-point demand of All Nepal Health Workers’ Organisation. —HNS

Chakkajam hits Doti

DIPAYAL: The chakkajam called by schoolteachers in Doti district affected normal life in Dipayal and Silgadhi. The teachers were demanding fulfillment of their seven-point demand. Many vehicles and passengers were stranded on the way due to the strike. Government schools were shut down as part of the teachers’ strike. The protestors also padlocked the Regional Education Directorate and the District Education Office, Doti. — RSS

Mine worker dies

DANG: Mine worker Domakanta Pun, 53, of Syuja VDC-5, died on Saturday afternoon at Kalimati VDC-4 after a mishap in a stone mine. Details of the incident were yet to be received, the police said. —HNS

Home for street kids

POKHARA: The Street Children Protection and Rehabilitation Centre run by the Pokhara Town Children Protection Committee has come to the rescue of street kids in the town. The centre has been providing food, shelter and education to the children brought at the centre from several parts of the city. The centre has so far provided the services to 1390 kids. It rehabilitates the children in their homes or in the society after bringing about changes in their lifestyle. Chairman of the organisation Rudra Bahadur Thapa said the centre receives donations to serve the kids. He said the District Education Office has provided a teacher and Rs 1,000 per children for the centre. — RSS

Street Festival

ITAHARI: The 7th Dharan Street Festival began here on Saturday with a view to drawing internal and foreign tourists to Dharan. The annual event is being organised on Bhanu Chowk-Chhata Chowk road. Stalls of food varieties, handicrafts, painting, environment and sanitary, information technology and other items have been put up in the festival. Mahendra Pradhan, president of the organising committee, said the festival showcases ethnic food competition, cake-eating competition, blood donation and several cultural events. Around 100,000 people are expected the festival that is likely to see a trade worth Rs 10 million. — RSS
