Robber nabbed

BANKE: Police detained a person while trying to rob a man who had just come out of the Rastriya Banijya Bank on Monday. Rajat Yadav was arrested while attempting to rob a person who was coming out of the bank with four lakh rupees, said Police Inspector Sudhir Shah. According to the police, a gang had been indulging in robberies in Nepalgunj for the past one year. Police said they were interrogating Yadav, as he could lead them to the gang. — HNS


Fugitive held after

Itahari: A person who was accused of involvement in a murder nine years ago was arrested in Sunsari yesterday. Ashok Kumar Mehta alias Sane, a resident of Shreepur in Sunsari, was arrested following a dispute in Dumraha, Sunsari. He was accused of murdering Ram Prasad Niraula nine years ago. Niraula, a resident of Inaruwa in Sunsari, was killed on November 24, 2000. He was an accountant at Sunsari District Education Office. Police said they found that Mehta was wanted for murdering Niraula when they checked his criminal record after they had booked him. He was sent to prison as per the direction of the court.

Mehta and his accomplices had shot dead Niraula while he was returning home from Saptari on a motorbike nine years ago, DSP Rajendra Dhakal said, adding, the gang also looted the bike and cash from Niraula. — HNS

Fatal snakebite

NAWALPARASI: A girl died when she was bitten by a snake at Kawasoti in Nawalparasi district on Sunday night. Nisa Kafle, 10, a resident of Shivnagar died when she was bitten by a cobra. Kafle had died while she was being rushed to Bharatpur hospital, locals said. "We have witnessed a spurt in the number of victims of snakebites due to the rise in mercury, said a source at Kawasoti-based Kali Gandaki Hospital. — HNS
