Nepalis’ gathering

KATHMANDU: International Nepali Literary Society (INLS) recently organised a literary programme at Enoch Pratt Central Library, Baltimore, to form the Maryland USA chapter of the INLS and inform about the organisations working for the benefit of Nepali community there, a statement issued here on Thursday said. Several Nepali artistes including actress Puja Chand and singer Prem Raja Mahat addressed the gathering. Dharam Biswokarma, president of Nepal America Society for Oppressed Community (NASO) urged writers to speak for the equality to make the dream of new Nepal come true. The gathering also formed the INLS Maryland chapter under the leadership of HB Bhandari Prabhat. — HNS

Donation for school

SYANGJA: A social worker, Bijaya Gurung, on Thursday donated Rs 1 lakh for providing scholarships to the students of Manakamana Secondary School, at Peklachaur of Syangja.

The interest on the donation money, which has been deposited in a local bank, would be used for the scholarship fund, said Yam Bahadur Gurung, chairman of the school management committee. Headmaster of the school, Purushottam Sharma, said school management committee chairman Gurung had helped collect Rs 4.2 million for development of physical infrastructure of the school. — HNS

Diarrhoea toll 21

RAUTAHAT: One more girl died due to diarrhoea in Rautahat on Thursday. The disease has already claimed 21 lives in the district. Pramila Shah, four-year-old daughter of Shivashankar Shah Kanu, of Saramujawa VDC-6 died on Thursday morning, a family source said. Meanwhile, chief of the Gaur Hospital, Dr Ramshankar Thakur, said a group of medical personnel have been sent in the areas affected by diarrhoea outbreak. — HNS

2 hurt in clash

BIRATNAGAR: Two persons were injured when villagers of Hatimudha-9, Pethiya of Morang clashed with armed dacoits at around 3 am on Thursday. Parbati Adhikari, 12,

and an unidentified dacoit were seriously injured in the incident, police said. Both are undergoing treatment at Koshi Zonal hospital. The dacoits looted goods worth Rs 30,000 from the home of Teknath Adhirari

3 killed in mishaps

NAWALPARASI: Three persons were killed in separate road mishaps in Nawalparasi along the Mahendra Highway on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Arjun Rijal, 8, died after a motorcycle hit him on Wednesday afternoon at Rajahar of Nawalparasi, while Tej Bahadur Kumal, 35, died when a tractor hit him on Wednesday afternoon at Chomara, Tamsariya, of the district and Pravin Thapa, 5, died when he was hit by a passenger bus on Thursday morning at Bardaghat, the district police office said. — HNS

Body found

SYANGJA: Body of one of the two persons, who had gone missing after the boat they were in capsized in the reservoir of the Kaligandaki A Hydel Project some two weeks ago, was found on Tuesday evening. Body of Jit Bahadur BK of Gulmi Jamarkhani-2 Mulpani was found on Tuesday, police said. The boat ferrying 42 persons from Mirmi to Setibeni capsized after it hit a boulder and search is on. — HNS

Border opened

BIRATNAGAR: Chinese police on Wednesday opened the border point at Kimanthaka of Sankhuwasabha making access to Chinese market of Dendang easier. Chinese police had blocked the point in August to prevent spread of bird-flu. The border was opened at the initiation of Kimathanka Border Police Office, keeping in view the festivals in Nepal, said incharge of the office, ASI Kumar Bhandari. — HNS
