Property looted
Siraha: Armed dacoits made off with cash and property worth Rs 200,000 from five houses in Kalyanpur Jungdi VDC-1 of Siraha district on Wednesday night. A local Mustafa Raeen said a gang of 12 dacoits looted the houses of Mohammed Taiyyab, Sabir Raeen, Mohammed Shamshul, Mohammed Buddhan and Mohammed Ataullah of Bangathiya Tole of Kalyanpur Jangdi VDC ward number 1. The looting spree lasted from midnight till 2 am, said Raeen. Locals Manal Hussain, Hamid and another person, who tried to resist the armed dacoits, were attacked by sharp weapons.
Students’ demand
KATHMANDU: The meeting of the nine students’ unions on Thursday decided to demand the government to hold the CA polls on time by reaching a consensus on the demands forwarded by the CPN-Maoist. The meeting decided to strengthen the unity among the nine students’ unions and stressed on the continued unity in the eight-party alliance to institutionalise the mandate of the Jana Andolan II. — HNS
Pranab-Yechuri meet
NEW DELHI: Indian Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee and senior politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechuri held a discussion on the fluid political scenario in Nepal on Thursday. During an hour-long discussion with Yechuri, Mukherjee, who is going to attend the UN general assembly on Friday, urged Yechuri to hold talks with the Nepal’s ruling parties, including the Maoists, a source said. “Yechuri will have telephonic conversations with leaders of the eight parties, including PM Girija Prasad Koirala,” the source said. — HNS
Inmates’ rally
BIRGUNJ: Jailbirds at the Birgunj jail, who have been staging phasewise agitation demanding general amnesty since mid-April, took out a torch rally on the jail premises on Thursday. They had sent a memorandum to PM Girija Prasad Koirala on Wednesday with the warning that they will stage a fast-unto-death from Friday if their demands are not met. — HNS

Mishap injures 5 cops
MAHOTTARI: Five policemen were injured on Thursday in a road mishap on the Mahendra Highway near the Banke river in Mahottari and Sarlahi districts.The police’s vehicle crashed while trying to avoid hitting a motorcycle, police said. SI Ram Kumar Mochi, Havaldar Raj Kumar Karki, constables Bishnu Dhakal, Rajan Khatri and Navraj Raj Shrestha were injured in the mishap. Dhakal has been referred to Kathmandu. — HNS
