Tender for checkpost

NEW DELHI: The Home Ministry of India has issued a tender notice for the construction of the Integrated Check Post in Raxaul. The Indian government had earlier announced it would establish well-equipped checkposts in Raxaul, Jogbani, Sunauli and Nepalgunj. The Indian home ministry, in a public notice, issued the bid for the establishment of such checkposts at Raxaul bordering Nepal, Wagha bordering Pakistan, Moreha bordering Myanmar and Petrapol bordering Bangladesh. The bid is for logistics companies, real estate companies and bigger corporate companies.— HNS

Work halted

POKHARA: Staffers of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) in Pokhara on Thursday halted work for two hours — 10 am to noon. The staffers, who have been agitating since Wednesday to pressurise the NAC to buy a new aircraft, will close the counter for two hours on Friday as well, Pokhara NAC chief Angadhoj Shah said. — HNS

One arrested

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested Bhakta Bahadur Shahi, 35, of Gel VDC-1 in Kalikot district, with bells, plates and other assets of a temple situated in Thankot. A resident of Gongabu, Shahi was arrested from Bafal Chowk, where he was trying to sell the items. — HNS

Property gutted

KATHMANDU: Property worth Rs 2.41 lakh was gutted when a hotel in Chabahil caught fire on Thursday. Police said gas leaked from a cylinder caused the fire. — HNS

Highway reopens

Pokhara: Traffic on Prithvi Highway, that had been disrupted by microbus entrepreneurs seeking compensation for vandalised microbuses, resumed on Thursday. Pabitra Thapa, 11, of Gagandanda was killed on the spot after a microbus heading Pokhara hit her on Wednesday and irate locals staged a demonstration and vandalised microbuses. An agreement was reached to provide Rs 135, 000 as compensation to the family of the dead and provide compensation for the microbuses vandalised in the incident. — HNS

Border meet begins

NEW DELHI: A two-day joint secretary level meeting of Nepal and India on border security started here on Thursday. Joint secretary to the Home Ministry of Nepal, Baman Prasad Neupane, is representing Nepal while his counterpart GS Patnayak is representing India in the meeting. A participant said, “An agreement was made to exchange signatures on the joint minutes of the meeting on Friday.” HNS

Ex-PM’s land grabbed

Dhankuta: Pro-Maoist peasants on Thursday grabbed 1,100 ropanis of land belonging to former Prime Minister and chairperson of the Rastriya Janashakti Party Surya Bahadur Thapa. Cadres of the All Nepal Farmers’ Association-Revolutionary and All Nepal Trade Unions’ Federation grabbed the land at Uttarpani-Hile road section in Dhankuta and hoisted their party flags on it. Though the land is one big plot, Thapa has had it registered in the names of various firms and relatives to escape the land ceiling law, Maoists said. — HNS
