SIRAHA: The Nepal Madheshi Students’ Front staged a demonstration in Siraha Bazaar on Monday to protest the agreement between the government and the Maoists. The front gave a memorandum to the DAO, urging that constituencies be demarcated according to ethnic population and that Nepal be made a federal democratic republic. — HNS

OHCHR man arrives

Kathmandu: Lena Sundh, who was appointed head of OHCHR-Nepal arrived here on Monday. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour had last month announced Sundh, a Swedish national, as her representative in Nepal. — HNS

Student beaten up

BIRATNAGAR: Some youths on Monday beat up a student of Mahendra Morang Campus, Manoj Karki. “The gang barged into his classroom and beat up Karki. The attackers thrust a sword into his back,” eyewitnesses said. — HNS

UML man threatened

POKHARA: Members of the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Trade Unions’ Federation (ANTUF) have threatened to kill a staff of the CPN (UML)-affiliated Nepal Transport Independent Workers’ Association (Pokhara), Sarbajeet Thapa. ANTUF men threatened to kill Thapa while he was collecting levy from the members of his association at Lekhnath (Kaski) on Sunday, said treasurer of the association Karna Singh Gurung. He added that the ANTUF men warned Thapa not to collect levy. Thapa has filed an application for his security at regional office of INSEC (Pokhara) on Monday, INSEC representatives said. — HNS

Property looted

Sindhuli: A gang of around 50 armed dacoits on Sunday looted the house of Baburam Gole at Kalpabriksha VDC in Sindhuli and made off with property worth around Rs 400,000. Three villagers — Bibi Maya Dong, Maya Dong and Sundari Maya Thing — were injured while resisting the dacoits. According to a local Raj Kumar Karki, the dacoits overpowered Gole’s family, blindfolded them and looted Rs 162,000 in cash and other valuables. — HNS
