Padlock therapy to power woes
Baglung, January 6:
Saying the areas affected by the hydro power centre are also facing power cuts, locals have padlocked the Modikhola Hydel Project in the district from yesterday.
They have also cut the drinking water supply for the employees of the centre and deprived them from buying daily commodities in the local markets.
Hundreds of residents from five VDCs, including Deupur, Tilahar, Chitre, Ramja and Bajung, padlocked the centre.
“We are also suffering power cuts. Had it been possible, we would have supplied electricity to the villagers,” an employee at the centre said.
The office and residential buildings of the centre are situated in Tilahar VDC while the hydel project is situated in Deupur VDC. The locals have also formed a struggle committee saying that they were deprived of power supply despite the Nepal Electricity Authority saying that the areas affected by the hydel projects would not face power cuts.
“We are protesting because our VDCs lie in affected areas and still suffering from power cuts,” committee president DB Chhetri said.
A police team, led by assistant chief district officer Gopi Krishna Dhungana, is providing security for the power house and dam of the hydel project.
