Woman dies of complications after giving birth to twins

PHIDIM: A woman gave birth to twins in remote Pauwa Saratap-9 of Panchthar district, but lost her life due to postpartum complications as her family resorted to shaman instead of taking her to any health facility for treatment.

Sanamaya Tamang (25) had given birth to twin daughters at her house on Friday morning. But placenta was not delivered after childbirth. Subsequently, her family members summoned a shaman with a hope of the delivery of retained placenta through shamanistic rituals, according to locals.

Since the placenta did not come out till the evening, the family decided to rush her to the hospital in neighbouring Ilam. She, however, breathed her last on the way to Ilam District Hospital, according to Padma Tamang, a neighbour.

The newborns are said to be out of danger.

The deceased's husband is currently in South Korea for foreign employment.
