Panel fails to meet on EC appointment issue

Kathmandu, October 15:

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee meeting scheduled for today to discuss the names recently recommended by the Constitutional Council for the post of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners could not be held today. Only seven MPs attended the meeting, while at least two-thirds majority of the 20-member panel is needed for the meeting to be conducted.

The Constitutional Council had recommended Bhoj Raj Pokhrel for the post of the CEC and Dr Nilkantha Uprety and Usha Nepal for the posts of election commissioners. The names have already been approved by the Council of Ministers, which today forwarded it to the Heaing Committee for discussion. Maoists have criticised the Constitutional Council’s recommendation. Sources said that Bhojraj, though an NC supporter, was nominated by the UML leadership.
