Construction of park, artificial lake in limbo

Hetauda, June 25

Construction of a tourist park with an artificial glacial lake at Simbhanjyang of Makawanpur district has been left in limbo due to lack of budget.

Former tourism minister Lokendra Bista had laid the foundation stone of the park four years ago. Local residents had initiated the construction of the artificial glacial lake at Simbhanjyang, Thaha municipality- 5 at an altitude of 2,488 metres three years ago.

The local development ministry had released a budget of Rs 700,000 for the construction of the lake’s dam. However, works have halted because the budget was insufficient.

Park Construction Committee Coordinator Binod Lama said local bodies’ apathy had delayed construction works. The locals planned to build an artificial glacial lake spread over 15 ropanis of land at the park, inside Karunabhumi Community Forest.

The plan envisions a children’s park, a tourism centre, a viewing tower, and a hiking route from Simbhanjyang to Risheswor Mahadev temple. The construction is estimated to cost Rs 40 million.

District Tourism Development Committee Coordinator and LDO Laxman Bikram Thapa said the DDC was positive that the park will be constructed.

According to the committee, the viewing tower will be 30 metres high, and the artificial glacial lake will be 700 metres long. Various cities and almost all mountain ranges in the Himalayas will be seen from the tower.
