Peace minister slams UNMIN for non-cooperation

BIRATNAGAR: Peace and Reconstruction minister Rakam Chemjong has accused the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) of not cooperating in the ongoing peace process.

Talking to mediapersons at Biratnagar airport, Chemjong said UNMIN had obstructed the peace and the constitution-drafting processes by refusing to provide the data of Maoist combatants to the government.

Chemjong was on his way to Dhankuta when he spoke at the airport.

He said the government was worried due to UNMIN's behaviour on the peace process. He also said that such action of UNMIN would affect the constitution-writing process as the new constitution cannot be drafted without integrating and managing the Maoist combatants.

Arguing that negligence of the former interim and the Maoist-led governments on the combatants' integration and management process was the main cause behind the current crisis, Chemjong said the present government was working on the integration of the combatants prior to the promulgation of the new constitution.
