Plea to revise journalism curricula

Kathmandu January 24:

A gathering of teachers who are teaching journalism and mass communication in the higher secondary level today called for a revision in the higher secondary education curricula to make it more reliable and up-to-date.

A number of journalism teachers had gathered at the Golden Gate College today to discuss the issues related to journalism and mass communication.

During the discussion, the teachers demanded inclusion of practical course in Grade XI and expressed concern about asking of questions from outside the syllabus in exams.

They also criticised the existing curriculum for not being up-to-date with the changing

world. They also criticised the HSEB for not implementing the curriculum devised through a seminar.

Coordinated by Bhanubhakta Acharya, a teacher and author, the discussion was organised with a view to discussing the syllabus of journalism and mass communication in Grade XI and Grade XII. On the occasion, Acharya presented proposed draft curricula for Grade XI and Grade XII. Commenting on the draft, teachers welcomed it and said it could be forwarded to authorities concerned for implementation after discussions with experts and teachers.

Chief of Journalism and Mass Communication Department at Madan Bhandari College Yam Bahadur Dura said the gathering was organised to share experiences and knowledge among the journalism teachers, besides discussing the problems they had been facing. He said the gathering decided to organise a seminar with HSEB authorities, course designers and teachers concerned.

The HSEB had made a minor revision in the curriculum of journalism and mass communication in 2005. But the authorities have not made any change since then despite ‘lapses’ in the curriculum.
