PM, experts mull climate accord

KATHMANDU: One week before the expiry of the deadline for submitting the targeted cut on the green house gas (GHG) emission by countries to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), according to Copenhagen accord on climate change, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today held a discussion with experts in the Climate Change Council (CCC) formed under his chairmanship.

“We discussed the

pros and cons of the Copenhagen accord and the PM directed the environment minister to clarify whether the nation had to submit a written document to the UNFCCC before the deadline,” said Prof Madan Koirala, a CCC member.

The Copenhagen accord has set the January 31 deadline for quantifying the cut on GHG emission by 2020 and for submitting the same to the UNFCCC secretariat.

But the experts said the eleventh-hour meeting was but a formality. “The PM, realising that the issue of the Himalayas did not get a priority in Copenhagen, urged the experts to come up with bold ideas on the concern,” said Dhananjaya Acharya, another CCC member.

The experts are demanding their active participation in the body, though

not ready to call it a

powerful one.
