Polls must for strengthening democracy: EC

Chief of Election Commission (EC) Keshavraj Bhandari today stressed on the need for polls, saying elections would help strengthen democracy.

Raj Bhandari who reached Kavre to discuss with politicians, journalists and representatives of civil society about the collection and update of voters’ list said while there was democracy, there would be election. In the absence of election, no political party could exist, he added.

The EC is working to hold the municipal election within 2062 BS as stated in the royal proclamation, Raj Bhandari said.

“We are preparing to hold the civic election within the deadline as stipulated by the King,” he said.

Raj Bhandari pointed out that every vote was crucial as even a single vote could result in either victory or defeat for a prime ministerial candidate. Hence, the EC will ensure that the name of every Nepali above the age of 18 is included in the voters’ list, said Raj Bhandari and added that Nepalis eligible to vote should not miss the chance to do so.
