KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari today granted amnesty to 282 jailbirds serving sentence in prisons across the country.

The convicts doing time in prisons were granted amnesty on the occasion of Constitution Day, on the recommendation of the government, in accordance with Article 276 of the constitution.

According to the Office of the President, the head-of-the-state granted amnesty to a total of 282 inmates across the country.

Of the total, 22 persons convicted with different crimes by various courts of the country were pardoned as per Article 276, Section 159 of Criminal Procedure (Code) Act, 2074 BS (2017).

Likewise, the president waived the remaining jail terms of 260 jailbirds as per Article 276 of Criminal Offence (Determination and Implementation of Punishment) Act, 2074 BS (2017).
