Prez Bhandari enacts controversial Medical Education Ordinance

KATHMANDU: The President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Friday authenticated the much awaited and controversial Medical Education Ordinance endorsed by the Cabinet, at Sheetal Niwas, Kathmandu.

According to a press statement issued by the President's Office today itself, the head-of-the-state enacted the Medical Education Ordinance 2017 in accordance with the Article 114.1 of the Constitution of Nepal.

On October 23, the Cabinet had endorsed the Medical Education Ordinance and sent it the President Bidya Devi Bhandari for enactment, according to the President's Office spokesperson Kul Prasad Chudal.

With the enactment, the act prohibits for opening of new medical colleges within Kathmandu Valley for 10 years.

As of yesterday, a team led by Dr. Govinda KC, who has been staging fast unto-death demanding reforms in medical sectors, had gone to meet PM Deuba to pressurise the government for passing the ordinance from President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
