Probe losses, NHRC tells govt

Kathmandu, August 28:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended the government to immediately form a commission to estimate the loss of life and property caused by the Saptakoshi River. It has also urged the government to devise short-term and long-term strategies to alleviate the plight of Saptakoshi flood victims Releasing its report, the constitutional body has called the government to provide shelter to the flood victims.

Hundreds of victims have been taking shelter near the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, the report states and demands safer places for the victims.

Many people have not come into contact with family members, it said, urging the government to conduct a study to ascertain the actual number of victims. The NHRC has recommended the government to provide relief to the victims by forging coordination with local businessmen, social workers and humanitarian organisations.

It has called on the government to immediately begin reconstruction of the Saptakoshi barrage to avert further losses.
