Progress in NC, NC (D) unification bid

Kathmandu, July 25:

The Nepali Congress (NC)-NC (D) unification process entered a crucial phase today with members of task force sitting down to come up with names of district unit chiefs of the party.

The meeting, which commenced today following orders from PM and NC President, Girija Prasad Koirala, and NC (D) President Sher Bahadur Deuba in this connection, got underway in the capital, with members of the task force growing more confident of the unification process than before.

“The process has entered the last phase. We are working to decide who among the leaders in all 75 districts will be heading the district units of the party. This will take about a week,” NC task force member Amod Upadhayay told this daily.

The issue of actually naming the district unit chiefs resurfaced today following persistent demand from both central and district level leaders to address the issue in a minute detail to ensure that there is no rancour.

Although top leaders of the parties had agreed to a bottomline to name district unit chiefs by issuing a guideline, the issue is being looked into great detail, it is learnt. The task force has suggested a formula for the central level. Under this formula, while Deuba will be promoted to the rank of the top leader alongside Koirala and KP Bhattarai, NC Vice-President Sushil Koirala will be named acting president of the party.
