Rain-triggered landslides, floods displace villagers in Bajura

BAJURA: Landslides and floods triggered by the incessant rainfall since last Friday have displaced the villagers of Kudi, in Budhiganga Municipality-1 of Bajura district.

Altogether 147 families including 114 Dalits have been displaced due to the natural disaster in which a person was killed and six houses were swept away.

Majority of the affected families have been compelled to live under the open sky in the nearby jungle while others are living in Kudikot Primary School in lack of tents, informed local Man Bahadur BK.

The government has provided Rs 100,000 to the family of the deceased and some relief materials to three of the affected families.

One of the flood victims, Surendra Saud said 23 members of five families have been living in the tunnel used for vegetable farming.

Mostly the pregnant women and children have been hit hard by the natural disaster as they have been forced to use water from the river.

According to Mayor of Budhiganga Municipality, Deepak Bikram Shah, the landslides have made it difficult in the relief management and distribution,

Mayor Shah said that the municipality had been working with various agencies to provide relief items to the displaced. Citing the lack of adequate space in the current place, he has further urged the need for shifting to other safe location.

Meanwhile, the effort is on to help flood victims, Chief District Officer of Bajura, Chet Raj Baral said. The District Administration Office has been coordinating with local Redcross Society for distributing tents while it is also communicating with the provincial and central government for relief items.
