Rayamajhi commission report: Former CJ urges govt to take action
Kathmandu, December 22:
The former Supreme Court justice who headed a commission formed to probe the suppression of the Jana Andolan II and submitted a report to the government has urged the government to make the report public at the earliest and take action against those implicated by the commission.
Talking to this daily today, Krishna Jung Rayamajhi called on the government to make public the Rayamajhi commission report at the earliest and take action against those found guilty of suppressing the people during the stir.
Breaking his silence one month after submitting the report, Rayamajhi said, “One month has gone by since I submitted the report. I am still waiting to see how the government implements it.”
Rayamajhi suggested the government to make the report public at the earliest and implement it. “The report is the property of the people and the government has no right to keep it under wraps,” he said, adding, “The government should make the report public and implement it if it is serious about protecting the people’s rights.”
Rayamajhi had submitted the report to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on November 20. Seven days later, the Council of Ministers had formed a Special Committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to take action against those found guilty of suppressing the people’s movement.
Ministers Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Gopal Man Shrestha, Narendra Bikram Nembang and Hridayesh Tripathi are members of the committee. The commission had recommended the government to take action against 202 persons, including King Gyanendra, on the charge of suppressing Jana Andolan II. The commission had interrogated 296 persons. The report has recommended the government and the parliament to prosecute all members of the erstwhile council of ministers on the charge of violating human rights after promulgating necessary law.
Apart from that, the commission had also recommended the prosecution of Kamal Thapa, Shrish SJB Rana and the then Chief of Army Staff, Pyar Jung Thapa, on corruption charges. The Commission had sought departmental action against the chiefs of security agencies, including the sitting army chief Rookmangud Katawal, Armed Police Force chief Basudev Oli and Nepal Police chief Shyam Bhakta Thapa.
“The people will punish the accused on the basis of the report if the government cannot take action against the latter,” Rayamajhi opined. He urged the civil society to press the government to publish the report and take action.
