Re-survey of houses affected with return of engineers

GORKHA: Re-survey of homes destroyed in the earthquake in Gorkha has been hampered after the engineers mobilised for the same returned without completing their work.

A total of 28 engineers were recalled by the National Reconstruction Authority, district office.

The engineers had been mobilised after 11,000 earthquake survivors in 11 local levels of Gorkha said they were deprived of the government housing grant.

Of the 28 engineers, 12 had completed their work while 16 were still working, said NRA Gorkha office chief Shiva Lal Poudel.

Of the 11,923 houses that were to be surveyed, the survey work of around 4,000 homes is yet to be carried out.

The engineers were recalled as their work was not completed even after extending their term of office by 22 days, said Poudel. The engineers were initially appointed for two months.

Meanwhile, during the 2.5 years since the earthquake in April 2015, 3,500 earthquake resistant homes have been built in Gorkha.

So far, 12,791 earthquake survivors have received the second instalment of the housing grant with more than 3,000 also taking the third instalment. The government has provided Rs. 300,000 in three installments.
