Rights situation ‘deteriorating’ in Parsa

Birgunj, December 29:

Stakeholders today expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of human rights in Parsa district due to the indifference of the security bodies.

Representatives of civil society, human right activists, professionals, journalists and political parties speaking at an interaction organised by the National Human Rights Commission here alleged that crime flourished as the primary concern of the police personnel and officials of the local administration was to make money.

Rights activist Ajay Adhikari said, “ It is difficult to separate politics from crime as cadres of the ruling parties in the name of underground organisations are involved in creating terror and collecting donations.” Another rights activist, Bijay Upadhayay, said impunity encouraged criminals. He said the NHRC had failed to bring an end to impunity.

“The local administration and policemen have failed to maintain security,” another rights activist, Kamal Mohan Pokhrel, said. Chief of protection sub-division of the NHRC, Yagya Prasad Adhikari, said human rights situation had been deteriorating in eight districts of

the eastern Tarai and right activists do not have good atmosphere to work independently in these districts.
