SAARC members except India endorse new summit date

Kathmandu, January 9:

SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries except India have endorsed Feburary 7-9 as the new dates to hold the 13th SAARC Summit in Dhaka.

Bangladesh being the host country of the summit had proposed the new dates and Pakistan in its capacity as current chairman of the grouping consulted the other member nations. The summit was postponed after the tsunami disaster that affected three SAARC countries —Sri Lanka, India and Maldives.

According to reports, Pakistan’s foreign office spokesperson Masood Khan announced the new developments. The foreign secretary of Pakistan is learnt to have contacted the foreign secretaries of the member countries for refixing the new dates. Sri Lanka, Nepal and Maldives have conveyed messages that these dates are suitable for them.

Pakistan is waiting a reply from India. As soon as a response is received from India, Pakistan will announce the final dates for the summit, Khan said.
