SAARC SG for MPs' active role in well-being of children

KATHMANDU: SAARC Secretary-General Amjad Hussain B Sial said parliamentarians could play a significant role for the well-being of children in the region.

Addressing the First Meeting of the South Asia Parliamentarians Platform for Children in Kathmandu on Friday, the executive head of the regional body said the meeting was a testimony of the importance the region had given to the well-being of children.

The meeting was organised by UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia (UNICEF ROSA) and was attended by parliamentarians from member states of the SAARC region.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General, who had assumed the office on Sunday, also highlighted important areas related to children on which SAARC had been collaborating with UNICEF, such as nutrition, sanitation, children affected by HIV and AIDS and children in disasters.

The Secretary General expressed his belief that parliamentarians of South Asia would use their expertise to transform the lives of the South Asian children.

The meeting would conclude today.
