Safety fear after medical student’s abduction
Pokhara, February 13:
Dipendra Ghimire, a third-year student in general medicine of Pokhara Technical Health Multipurpose Institute (PTHMI) at Rambazaar of Pokhara, was abducted yesterday.
Ghimire, a permanent resident of Jyamire in Myagdi district, was abducted at around 5 pm, his friends said. “He was the secretary of the newly formed Student Welfare Committee. He was busy in preparing a welcome and farewell programme scheduled to be held in the institute today.”
The information about his abduction came to the light after an SMS was received to the cell
phone of SWC chairman Nabin Man Khadka at 6:15 pm today.
“Your friend has been abducted and action would be taken against all the members of the SWC if they did not resign. Come to take the corpse of your friend,” the message read.
Institute chief Rabindra Prasad Shrestha said all the members of the SWC had already resigned but the reason behind Ghimire’s abduction was yet to be known.
Investigation into the incident is underway, said police inspector Chun Bahadur GC. “One person held in course of the investigation has been released after interrogation.”
Tank Prasad Adhikari, chairman of the Management Committee at the institute, and chief Shrestha have appealed to various organisations to take initiatives for Ghimire’s safe release.
