Saptari agitators intensify protests seeking martyr status for Tuesday shooting victim
RAJBIRAJ: The agitating Madhesi parties in Saptari district decided not to collect the body of Rajeev Raut, who was killed in a police firing during a protest yesterday, until the state declares him a martyr.
Raut (28) was killed while staging a protest against the proposed six-Pradesh model, in Bhardaha of Saptari on Tuesday.
The body is currently at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences for postmortem.
The agitating parties held a joint meeting today at the incident site and put forth three additional demands including martyrdom to Raut.
Other two demands include that a statue of the deceased be established at the incident site and the place be named after him; and the government arrange a job for a family member of the deceased as well as fund his children's education.
On Tuesday, the alliance had put forth six demands including dismissal of the Chief District Officer Birendra Kumar Yadav and District Police Chief Shishir Karmacharya and investigation into the case by a high-level independent body.
Meanwhile, the protesters resumed demonstrations after the administration lifted a 13-hour curfew on Wednesday.
They set the Bhardaha-based police beat and two motorbikes on fire.
Meanwhile, CDO Yadav has called human rights activists, media persons and civil society representatives to help maintain decency in protests.
