Khotang, December 1

Panchakanya Basic School, which was closed for the past two-and-half years, has come into operation at Rawabenshi Rural Municipality-6, Khotang.

The school was closed in November, 2016 after teachers working in the school refused to fulfil the demands of guardians. The guardians had demanded that the English be used as a medium of instruction.

School Management Committee Chair Mohan Gurung said the school had resumed classes and adopted curriculum prepared for English medium schools. The management committee said local guardians were being requested to bring their wards back and hold discussion among the stakeholders.

Rupa Rai, a local, said they faced problems sending their wards to another school after the nearby school was closed due to the dispute between teachers and guardians.

The school established in 1997 has only 22 students. School management committee chair Gurung said English as a medium of instruction was adopted to attract students. He added that they were aiming to enrol more than 60 students in the new academic session.
