School closed for week due to strange disease

A school in Udayapur was closed for a week with effective from today after students started falling unconscious.

Ghanchakre Basic Level School at Triyuga Municipality was closed for a week after students started falling unconscious, screaming and weeping among showing such unusual behaviour.

School head teacher Netra Kafle said the school administration has decided to close the school due to the unusual behaviour of students. He said teaching-learning activities had stopped in consultation with parents and guardians.

Kafle said that Sakuntala Tamang, a second grader, fell unconscious for the first time in the school on May 16. Kafle added that the guardian of the girl said she was ill earlier too. He added that another fifth grader Tika Kumari Tamang had also shown the same symptoms after a week. He said students were falling ill one after another.

Meanwhile, Ward No 6 Chairman Nirmal Chaudhary of Triyuga Municipality has deployed a team of health workers to the affected areas after the strange disease appeared in the school. Chaudhary said the health team led by Dr Ashok Tiwari had reached students’ houses and treated them. The team of health workers said that the problem seen among students was due to tension both at home and school.

“The same problem can be seen in other students,” said Dr Tiwari.
