Scores held in Chitwan for breaching poll codes

CHITWAN: At least 51 persons were detained in Chitwan on the charge of violating the election code of conduct and indulging in anti-election activities.

Police said they held 19 persons in Bharatpur on Friday night when they were roaming in groups, feasting and obstructing roads. They, however, were released this morning, according to SP Deepak Thapa of the District Police Office.

Police took nine persons in custody after they did not surrender their licensed weapons on the eve of local level elections, SP Thapa said.

The weapons were impounded and they were released today after a night in custody.

After the local elections were announced, the local administration had asked the general public to surrender their licensed weapons before April 28. But only 27 out of 121 licensed weapons were surrendered to the authorities by the deadline.

Police said 23 others were arrested after they were found involved in anti-election activities and hooliganism.
