Secretary-General Ban to meet DPM Singh on UNGA sidelines
KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's spokesperson said that the UN leader understands the decision of Nepal's Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to cancel his visit to the United Nations to focus on the domestic political situation and to facilitate dialogue.
Issuing a note to the correspondents, the spokesperson said UNSG Ban looks forward to meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest to Nepal and the United Nations.
Deputy Prime Minister Singh is leading the Nepali delegation to the United Nations General Assembly.
"Underlining that democratic transitions are complex and long-term processes, the Secretary-General commends the Nepali people on the adoption of the new constitution, a milestone in the peace process. He continues to stress the importance of non-violence and respect for peaceful protest," the note further said.
Referring to the ongoing turmoil in Tarai districts over the new Constitution, according to the note, Ban has urged all the stakeholders in Nepal to resolve their differences in a spirit of compromise and in a flexible manner to pave the way for a democratic, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous Nepal..
