Security beefed up in Chitwan to prevent poaching

CHITWAN: Authorities have made special security arrangements in the Chitwan National Park, considering the possibility of poaching of wild animals on the sidelines of elections.

With the participation of hundred of Nepal Army personnel, National Trust for Nature Conservation staffers and local residents of the buffer zone,'Sweep Operation' has been launched to prevent poaching in the Chitwan National Park, according the CNP Chief Conservation Officer Ram Chandra Kandel.

Security personnel have beefed up patrol and security checks, Nepal Army's Colonel Madhav Thapa, said.

He informed that forces from other five other battalions have also been brought for the mission.

Last month, an adult male rhinoceros was killed in the CNP after no reports of rhino poaching for 1071 days.

Altogether 550 personnel had been deployed for the security in CNP and they traverse around 1500 km on patrol daily, according to Thapa.

CCTV cameras have been installed at 10 sensitive areas for 24-hour surveillance.
