Deuba seeks Oli's support

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba met CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli on Friday and sought his support on the ruling parties’ efforts to amend the constitution. The government wants to register constitution amendment bill in a few days to address demands of the Federal Alliance and United Democratic Madhesi Front.

According to UML Secretariat Secretary Krishna Gopal Shrestha, the UML chair told the NC leader that the government should first bring the draft of the constitution bill. According to Shrestha, Oli told Deuba that the government should prove the rationale for amending the constitution. He added that he could react only after seeing the draft of the constitution amendment bill. Shrestha said his party chair had told Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal the same thing and he told Deuba the same thing.

Shrestha said he believed that his party would not support the constitution amendment bill as demanded by Madhesi parties. “If our party had to support the Madhesi parties’ demand to amend the constitution, Oli-led government would have done that. Pushpa Kamal Dahal did not have to form a new government,” Shrestha said.
