Small firms fall prey to ongoing conflict
Siraha, March 5:
Over 75 per cent of small and cottage industries in Siraha were closed in the past few years due to unfavourable environment for the operation of the industries, mainly due to the ongoing conflict in the Tarai region. The closure has cost Rs 3 lakh annual revenue to the government and the jobs of over 5,000 people.
According to Cottage and Small Industries Development Office, Lahan, 75 per cent of the total industries in the district have been affected by the conflict, while others have not renewed their licences.
“We have not even been able to take necessary actions against defaulting industries due to the conflict,” said Tejendra Jha, an officer. He also complained of various infrastructure woes.
