Snowfall cripples life in far-western hills

Life has adversely been affected due to heavy snowfall following the rain in Bajura, Bajhang, Humla, Jumla, Mugu, Darchula, Baitadi and Accham, among other districts.

Life has been hit at Himali Rural Municipality, Budhinanda Municipality, Chededaha Rural Municipality, Swamikartik Rural Municipality and Jagannath Rural Municipality in Bajura. Transportation service to the northern part of the district has been obstructed after heavy snowfall at Porakhe Lekha of Pandusain and Martadi of Bajura. Locals said that they could not come out of their houses due to excessive cold.

Education institutions of the Far-west Province and Karnali Province have remained open despite heavy snowfall and the bone-biting cold. Chairman of Ward No 7 in Badimalika Municipality Dharma Padhya said schools were open even though the number of students attending schools was very low.

Similarly, heavy snowfall has also taken place in Kanda, Dolichaur, Surma, and Gadara, among other places of the high hills of Bajhang.

Life has been affected in Dolpu, Kirami, Polu and Mugu after heavy snowfall. Lok Bahadur Bishowkarma, a local of Mugu,  said people were facing the problems moving from one place to another, grazing cattle and supplying daily essentials due to snowfall.

Regular air service from Nepalgunj to Bajura, Humla, Jumla, Dolpa and Mugu has also been obstructed due to incessant snowfall since last night. According to Civil Aviation Authority, Nepalgunj, 30 to 40 daily flights from Nepalgunj have been halted since Tuesday morning.

Likewise, life in Manang has also been badly affected due to tcontinuous snowfall in almost all parts of the district on Thursday. Locals said Manang received three feet snow.

Kul Bahadur Ghale of Chame Rural Municipality said Manang, Tanki, Bhakra, Gharu, Khangsar, Pisang and Chame, among other places of Upper Manang have received heavy snow. He said locals could not come out of their houses and were huddled around fires warming themselves. There has been heavy snowfall in the northern parts of Lamjung also.

In Mustang, life has also been badly affected due to continuous snowfall. Regular air service from Pokhara to Jomsom has been obstructed. Telephone service in lower Mustang has been obstructed and almost all roads are covered with snow.

Villagers of Damodar Kunda Rural Municipality had cleared the snow and opened a five-kilometre at Ward No 5 of the rural municipality. Ward Chairman Tasi Dhunduk Gurung said transportation service resumed after 40 locals cleared the snow. He said people from every household had worked to clear the road.

Excessive cold has hit life in Bhairahawa. Education institutions have been closed for two days while the number of cold-related patients has increased in the health facilities. A staff at Gautam Buddha Airport said air service had been affected due to bad weather.
