Snowfall hits Karnali life hard

KATHMANDU: Life in Karnali region has been affected due to continuous snowfall accompanied by rainfall from Thursday.

The freezing temperature has halted daily activities of people in the region.

Transportation has also been affected. Long-route vehicles have not been on operation whereas short-route ones have hardly been getting enough passengers.

Flights to and from the zonal headquarters, Jumla, have been halted for the past five days. Similarly, trade and business activities have been stalled due to the excessive cold for the last three days.

According to Jumla-based Climate Field Office chief, AP Chaurasiya, the minimum temperature this morning was 2.5 degree Celsius and there was 20.2-centimetre snowfall.

Chaurasiya further said the snowfall did not affect Kalikot and Mugu districts much while it had a greater impact in Humla, Dolpa and Jumla, with around four feet of snow in the high-altitude places of the districts.

Meanwhile, Senior Agriculture Development Officer of the Jumla District Agriculture Development Office, Bharat Prasad Kandel, said that the snowfall would benefit farmers  as it was necessary for the soil lacking moisture.
