Soldier torches wife, two-year-old daughter

Dhading, July 20:

A woman, who was allegedly set on fire by her husband, died in the Chhauni (Kathmandu)-based Military Hospital last night.

Kiran Bhandari, an armyman working with the Kathmandu-based Bajrabahadur Battalion, had poured kerosene on his 21-year-old wife Rammaya and two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Sumina before setting them on fire at their residence in Pinda VDC-6, Dhading, on Sunday, locals said.

Sumina died on the way to the hospital in Kathmandu, while Rammaya died while undergoing treatment in the military hospital, Sriram Karki, a relative of Rammaya, said.

Rammaya accused her husband and aunt-in-law of setting her on fire, Karki said. The military police have taken Kiran Bhandari under control for investigation, though the Bhandari family has been saying that Rammaya had set herself and her daughter on fire.
