Solukhumbu man dies from altitude sickness in Mera Base Camp

SOLUKHUMBU: A man died after suffering from acute altitude sickness during a trekking trip in the Mera Base Camp at Mahakulung Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Kawar Kumar Rai (43) of Gudel in Mahakulung-4 in the district.

It has been learnt that Rai had gone to a hiking trip to the Mera Base camp five days ago. He then complained of a headache, fatigue and dizziness.

Rai breathed his last at Thammak in the district while he was being rushed to his home for treatment, police said.

Altitude sickness could strike in lack of adequate acclimatisation as it is a reaction to the lower amounts of oxygen available at high altitudes due to the decreased atmospheric pressure.
